Encircl is an open-source project.
Each changing of the seasons, a scrappy bunch of scientific artists and artistic scientists from all over the world gather around one common theme and see what they come up with. We produce a collaborative issue and throw it out there around a specified date. Anyone can do it.
By thinking about the world around us in new ways, we believe we can reform and advance actual environmentalism. Uniting science and the humanities in shared spaces may help us hobble through the changing conditions of twenty-first-century Earth.
Encircl is a way of thinking about the world around. It started when a group of environmental professionals and enthusiasts got together and realized that they had to renew the word environment.
"The word carries too many connotations," one person said.
"It's just cumbersome," said another.
"It doesn't mean what it used to mean."
"I actually don't like thinking about it anymore."
When they looked up the actual origin of the word, in fact, they found that it had a very simple meaning: "that which is going around," or "the surroundings." So, they concluded, the environment is everything around us.
